How to install Nocturn in Ubuntu

Nocturn is a simple cross-platfom desktop Twitter app which supports multiple accounts built with React, Redux and Electron. It contains the functionalities such as share status, Vim- style key bindings, search for tweets, supports multiple account support and delete tweets. This tutorial explains the installation process of Nocturn in Ubuntu.

Installation procedure

To start the installation process, download the Nocturn package using the wget command.

root@linuxhelp1:/home/linuxhelp1# wget https://github.com/k0kubun/Nocturn/releases/download/v1.2.1/Nocturn-linux-x64.zip
--2017-05-29 06:20:25--  https://github.com/k0kubun/Nocturn/releases/download/v1.2.1/Nocturn-linux-x64.zip

The package has been downloaded, extract the package by running the following command.

root@linuxhelp1:/home/linuxhelp1# unzip Nocturn-linux-x64.zip

   creating: Nocturn-linux-x64/locales/
  inflating: Nocturn-linux-x64/locales/ko.pak

Move the extracted package to /opt/ directory by running the following command.

root@linuxhelp1:/home/linuxhelp1# mv Nocturn-linux-x64 /opt/

Change the /opt/ directory to /opt/Nocturn-linux-x64/ by executing the following command.

root@linuxhelp1:/home/linuxhelp1# cd /opt/Nocturn-linux-x64/

Download the icon for Nocturn using the wget command.

root@linuxhelp1:/opt/Nocturn-linux-x64# wget https://github.com/k0kubun/Nocturn/blob/master/resources/Nocturn.png
--2017-05-29 06:23:04--  https://github.com/k0kubun/Nocturn/blob/master/resources/Nocturn.png

Next create the desktop launcher for the application by executing the following command.

root@linuxhelp1:/opt/Nocturn-linux-x64# gedit /usr/share/applications/nocturn.desktop

A configuration file is opened. Add these following lines to the file. Save and exit from the file.

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Nocturn
Comment=Multi-platform Twitter Client built with React, Redux and Electron
Path=/opt/Nocturn-linux-x64
Exec=/opt/Nocturn-linux-x64/Nocturn
Icon=/opt/Nocturn-linux-x64/Nocturn.png
Terminal=false
Categories=Internet Communication Electron 

To launch the application, run the following command in the terminal. The Nocturn application is launched in the target system.

root@linuxhelp1:/opt/Nocturn-linux-x64# ./Nocturn

To start using the application enter the user' s e-mail and password credentials to login.

The email account successfully is added to Nocturn application and now the application can be used for various tweet functionalities.
