How to install gimp in Ubuntu

To install gimp 2.8.18 in Ubuntu

Gimp is an image editor used by graphic designer, illustrator, photographer or scientist. Installation of Gimp is explained in this article.

To install Gimp

Before installing gimp, enable the repository by using the following command.

root@linuxhelp1:~# add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
 This PPA is for Ubuntu > =12.04 and Linux Mint > =13

Installing:
open a terminal and type:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gimp

Removing:
open a terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp

Run the following command to install the gimp

To launch gimp

Start the gimp by using the following command.

root@linuxhelp1:~# gimp

For creating a new file, go to file&rarr new
Installation-Gimp2.8.18-image-editor-Ubuntu-new-file
Create a New Image page opens. Set the image size and click OK.
Installation-Gimp2.8.18-image-editor-Ubuntu-image-size
Installation-Gimp2.8.18-image-editor-Ubuntu-New-Image-page

The gimp manual has to be installed manually, otherwise get the help online.

For saving the file file&rarr save as

The file will be saved in the xcf format.
